Growing from Positive Change
Can we look towards the following results? Public school reform has been growing in positive directions. Educators are gathering knowledge in less likely places. Site-based management is bringing school communities together. We are learning from the successes of other cultures. Greek culture provides some insight into building strong communities, devoted to one other and sharing with one another. School sites may use aspects of Greek culture to expand on their present knowledge and to strengthen the democratic foundation upon which they were conceived. Current educational systems might model the ancient Greek agora, the premises upon which public space was created. Public schools will be restored to the public and all citizens of a community will be empowered to participate in their success.
Reflect upon the answers to these questions: Do all participants believe that schools can improve? Can schools move towards change efficiently and effectively?
What models would you incorporate to help site-based management work? Does site-based management take into consideration the necessary elements needed to change the face of education positively?
Learn from other cultures. Seek out positive solutions to problems in urban education from outside your present scope. There are valuable lessons to be learned and to be shared. Extend yourself and empower others to become participants in education. Learning is an ongoing process for everyone.
